February 9 How Does Your Garden Grow?
Max Hence, local organic tomato grower and owner of Hillendale Farms, will discuss the connection between gardening and farming techniques and healthy soils and crops. Well nourished soils affect the heartiness of plants, their resistance to disease and insects and ultimately the nutritional value of your food.
March 8 We Are What We Eat
Where does your food come from and why should it be important to you? Health and fitness expert Dr. Christine Greene will discuss the benefits and tradeoffs of eating and buying local foods. The foods we choose and consume have nutritional and and economic impacts on a family or community
April 12 Watch Hill Farms
Eric and Marsha Fiske, owners of Watch Hill Farms, will talk about the historic importance of the 10-acre property and what it is like to run a small business that promotes the idea of living a healthy and rich life filled with whole foods, fresh fish, honey, chemical -free produce, syrup and eggs.
Green Reading Group
February 15, 6:30pm
Our second ‘green reads’ book discussion led by Maureen Logan and Edward Rossomando will be on Eaarth: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet by Bill McKibben.. A journalist and environmental activist, Bill McKibben unflinchingly describes our current situation and then helps us see how we might survive in our smaller, sustainable communities. The group will meet in the Land Trust building.
Charlestown Wine and Spirits: Case Study in Sensibly Green Architecture

Charlestown Wine and Spirits opened in May 2011 as an energy-efficient, Sensibly Green, liquor store. Designed and built by Oyster Works, CWS features a geothermal heating and cooling system, an energy efficient envelope, and computer controlled LED lighting.

Join us at the WLT building where Charlestown Wine and Spirits' owner, Jon Maldon; architect, Megan Moynihan; and project manager, Andrew Baer, will discuss the Sensibly Green approach that was taken in this unique construction project. They will give a detailed overview of the energy efficient systems and technologies and discuss the impact on operating costs and return on investment.

Trail Walks Series 2012

Please join us for our free-guided trail walks on Thursdays. All walks are at 10 AM unless stated to the contrary. We will visit various local conservation properties, including some of our own Westerly Land Trust preserves. Walks are between 1 ½ to 3 hours and are open to all ages with our target group being agile seniors. Please keep in mind that these are wooded trails with stumps, roots and rocks so be sure to wear hiking boots or good walking shoes. If the weather is icy you should bring stabilizers or something for traction. Be aware that our hikes leave promptly so be on time!

In State Management areas everyone is required to wear 200 square inches of solid daylight fluorescent orange from the third Saturday in October to the last day of February and the last Thursday in April to the last day in May, annually.

February 2 Rome Point, North Kingstown
A very nice walk of about 4 miles with outstanding views of the bay and a good possibility of seeing one of the largest haul out of seals in the bay. February 9 Dr. John Champlin Glavier Park, Westerly
A walking tour of the WLT’s Glacier Park preserve featuring wooded trails with gentle hills and some rocky sections. This site’s unique geological features are worth the trip. Meet at the trailhead off of Tom Harvey Road just outside the entrance to Winnapaug Cottages. February 16 Carolina South, Richmond
Woods, fields, and a look at the Pawcatuck River. The footing is secure, with few rolling stones or troublesome roots. From I-95 take Rte 138 west through Hope Valley. At blinking light take left (sign says Mechanic Street, but also known as Switch Road) and go about 3 miles to Pine Hill Road. Turn left and go 0.6 miles to the parking lot on right near red DEM building. Or on Pine Hill Road, 1.7 miles west of RI 112, or 0.6 miles east of Switch Road. February 23 Ryan Park, North Kingstown
Ryan Park is around Bellville Pond, a very pretty and little known pond in North Kingstown. The walk is approximately 5 miles long with flat easy walking. From Westerly take Rte 1 to Rte 4. At the second stop light after merging onto Rte 4 turn right on Oak Hill Road. There are two official entrances to the park on Oak Hill. We will meet at the first entrance on the left. March 1 Tillinghast Management Area, West Greenwich
This hike will be between 4 to 5 miles thru woods and around pond. Directions: From I-95 take Exit 5B - Rte 102 North. Follow Rte 102 for 3 miles, past the West Greenwich Town Hall. Turn left onto Plain Meeting House Road, follow for 3.5 miles. You will PASS the Wickboxet Management Area and the entrance to Narrow Lane. Turn right at the next intersection, onto Plain Road. March 8 Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center, Mystic, CT
Explore the woodland, wetland and meadow habitats on some of the Nature Center’s lesser-known trails on this easy hike. I-95 south to Exit 90. North on Rte 27 to Jerry Brown Road. Right on Jerry Brown ¾ mi to Pequotsepos Road (stop sign). Right on Pequotsepos, DPNC is on left, about ½ mile as you come around a sharp curve. March 15 Woody Hill South, Westerly
Cellar holes, a Girl Scout camp, a quarry, and stonewalls are features of this lollypop hike of about 3.5 miles. Leave Wall-Mart parking lot, extreme SE corner at 9:45, or the Fern Drive trailhead at 10:00 AM. Deep snow may require snowshoes. Rain cancels. March 29 Riverwood Preserve, Westerly
This guided walk through WLT’s Riverwood Preserve has interesting quarry remnants, river views and descent into a beautiful gorge. Some climbing in rocky areas will be involved as the best views are from higher elevations. Meet on Old Hopkinton Road at the end of Boy Scout Drive. April 5 Great Swamp, Kingston
This five-mile loop is on a peninsula of high ground rising 80 feet above Worden Pond and the surrounding swamp. Most of the trails are gravel roads. The footing is solid, and the slopes are gentle. Directions: Liberty Lane leads south from Rte 138 - 200 yards west of the junction of Rtes 138 and 110. Follow the lane 2 miles, past the Great Swamp management headquarters, to the parking area at the dead end. April 12 Grills Preserve, Westerly (Bradford)
This walk on WLT’s 500-acre preserve is over primarily flat terrain often along the Pawcatuck River on clear, wide trails. There is a gorgeous scenic view from the top of aptly named, Big Hill, which requires a bit of steep climbing. Meet at the parking lot at the cul-de-sac end off Bowling Lane in Bradford Village. April 19 Woody Hill North, Westerly

April 26 Bluff Point, Groton, CT
One of the few undeveloped stretches of Conn. Coastline; Bluff Point is a treasure with a rich history. For the 5-mile walk, bring warm clothing and sturdy shoes. Some sections may be muddy. From Rte 95S, take Exit 88. Turn left on Rte 117 and right on Rte 1 at the second light. Then, at the next light, turn left on Depot Rd. Follow this street past Industrial Rd. and under the railroad tracks. A dirt road leads ahead to the large parking lot and closed gate. After the walk we will have a picnic on site so bring lunch.
