Avondale

This Preserve is open and flat with a paved 0.6-mile loop road which is excellent for walking, jogging, and biking. Its protected grassland habitat has been enhanced by the planting of native species and ongoing invasive plant species management. This is a popular birding site and grassland nesting birds that are now rare in RI nest here, such as the bobolink.

Parking is at the end of either Quail Run or Grassland Way, both of which are off Watch Hill Road.

Champlin Glacier Park

This forested Preserve has unique kettle and kame topography resulting from long ago glacier melts. It is adjacent to and just east of the Winnapaug Cottages Development on Tom Harvey Road and Shore Road. There are trails throughout the Preserve featuring a scenic overlook high above Shore Road.

Grills Preserve

This Preserve is accessed from its large gravel parking area at the end of Bowling Lane. Largely forested with excellent access along the river, the parcel features a beautiful panoramic view from the top of Big Hill. Trails are primarily old dirt roads, easily followed and ideal for walking, jogging, biking and snow shoeing. Additional smaller trails strictly for foot traffic are also maintained. Since 2008, Grills Preserve is home to the Westerly Middle and High School Cross Country teams, with a race course on the trail system.

Riverwood Preserve

This Preserve has a great variety of trails both in the lowlands along the Pawcatuck River and at higher elevations toward the interior of the property. Access to this Preserve is challenging but worth the effort. Visitors must park along Old Hopkinton Road at the end of Boyscout Drive then walk up Boyscout Drive and past the Boyscout camp to enter the Preserve.
